Slow week

After a hectic weekend I’ve been spending time at home with the missus (yeah, got married on the last day of April so now I can call her the missus for real). Not getting much done except catching up on TV shows I’ve neglected while on the road ;). I’m currently plowing through Band of Brothers and Mad Men.  BoB is everything everyone told me it was. It’s not often a show comes along that grips a hold of you that way. It’s a shame that Pacific is supposedly not as good, but I will definitely watch it regardless.

While I’m on the subject of television, I finished Deadwood recently – which, in my opinion, is one of the best and well-written shows ever made. The dialogue is brilliant and almost Shakespeare-esque sometimes so it took me a while to get into it, but once I got used to it I absolutely loved it. People who haven’t seen the show dismiss it with the argument that they “don’t like westerns”. That’s just the thing – it’s not a western. It’s just an extremely cool drama series in a western setting. There’s hardly any action at all – the dialogue brings the story forward. It might sound boring, but I assure you it’s anything but! It’s just like Battlestar Galactica, which wasn’t just another sci-fi show (it, too is one of my absolute favorite shows that made it through to the end without cancellation). It pisses me off that Deadwood didn’t get a proper ending, getting cancelled after the third season just like that. I read that there were plans to make two TV movies to round the show off, but apparently the set has been dismantled and it will most likely never happen. So I guess I’ll have to make do with David Milch‘s (the writer) next project John from Cincinnati, which got cancelled after only one season. It glads me that he’s got a new show under way. I expect it to be nothing but awesome. And I also look forward to seeing Ian McShane (who plays the role of Al Swearengen in Deadwood to perfection) as a bad-ass captain in the next installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean series.

So what else am I watching at the moment? Well, my wife and I watch Grey’s Anatomy and its spinoff series Private Practice together, and they’re still going strong after six and three seasons, respectively. We also follow Brothers and Sisters, The Vampire Diaries, True Blood, Weeds and Dexter – all solid shows. My wife doesn’t like sci-fi that much, so I’m watching Caprica (BSG spinoff) and Heroes by myself. Caprica isn’t as good as I hoped, being as it is created and written by the team behind BSG, and Heroes is unfortunately dwindling in quality. The first season beats most shows, but now I’m just watching it for some mindless entertainment every once in a while.

I’ve been thinking about getting into Entourage, which everyone says is so great. On the other hand, everyone said 30 Rock was great as well, but after three episodes I didn’t think it was worth more of my time. I’ve also got the second season of Californication lined up, although for some reason I don’t feel that interested in watching it – the first season had kind of a definite ending and it feels like I don’t need to know what happened after. Maybe it’s partly because I’m watching so many other shows right now… It’s difficult to keep up as it is!

Phew, that was some write-up about television shows! What can I say, I love good TV! I’d love to read about what you’re watching. Let me know if there are any shows that you think I should check out.
